The city of Stockholm is built on 14 islands around one of Europe's largest and best-preserved medieval city centres. Stockholm is Scandinavia's economic centre. Stockholm was the European Green Capital in 2010.

 

The Stockholm region is home to more than a fifth of Sweden's total population, with more than 2 million inhabitants; the city of Stockholm is the most populated area, with more than 843,000 inhabitants in September 2010.

 

All education is free of charge in Sweden. At the age of six, children can attend a preparatory year before compulsory school starts at the age of seven. Most pupils continue to attend upper secondary school.
